What We Do

About the Swedish Lapphund Club of America

Our Mission

Promote the recognition and establishment of a healthy Swedish Lapphund population in the United States.

Our Goals

  • Preserve and promote genetic diversity in the breed (defined as maintaining a Coefficient of Inbreeding, or COI, of ≤ 2.25% between breeding pairs unless other factors outweigh this goal in individual pairings.

  • Build a welcoming community to provide information to those interested in the breed.

  • Foster community outreach and the education of event judges to maintain the Swedish Lapphund for future generations.

  • Organize and participate in relevant events, including training activities, AKC shows, and canine recreation.

  • Foster a partnership with the Svenska rasklubben for svensk lapphund (SRSL) in Sweden by adopting the SRSL Breed Specific Breeding Strategy for the Swedish Lapphund to promote alignment with international breeding efforts.

  • Honor the heritage of the Swedish Lapphund dog as an ancient reindeer herding breed, and its history with the Sami people.
